Claire Hargan (Prestonfield) (pictured left), beat Amanda Edwards (Liberton), at the fourteenth hole of the Royal Burgess Golf course at Barnton this afternoon, to win the Antonio Vase and the Midlothian Champion of Champions tournament for the first time. A good crowd of supporters watched an excellent game played in brilliant sunshine. Both players enjoyed the opportunity to play the Royal Burgess Golf Course for the first time. Thanks go to the Royal Burgess for granting courtesy of the course and to the Ladies Golf Centre of Edinburgh for their sponsorship of this competition. The beaten semi-finalists in this competition were Jane Turner (Glencorse) and Sally Watson (Murrayfield). |
| Claire won the 1st but Amanda levelled
the game at the 2nd with a birdie 3. The next two holes were
won by Claire with par 4's and the 5th was halved in 3's.
At the sixth hole Amanda found a fairway bunker off the tee
and was short of the green in three. Claire played a magnificent
second shot which finished about 12 inches from the hole.
Amanda conceded the hole and Claire was 3 up - Claire also
won the 7th to go 4 up. The next five holes were halved. At
the 13th Claire was just off the back of the green while Amanda
was short of the green and her pitch ran off line leaving
a tricky putt. Claire's long putt was close and a par 3 was
conceded Amanda's putt hit the hole but failed to drop. Claire
was 5 up with 5 to go. At the 14th both players were on the
green in two - Amanda had a safe two putt for a par 4 but
Claire had left herself a tricky putt for the half. Claire
holed and won the championship by 5&4.
Claire's consistent long game was the key to her victory and she was able to reach the long pars 4 in two easily. Congratulations to both players on the standard of golf which they played in a sporting and friendly match. |
