Claire Hargan (Prestonfield) will meet Jane Williamson
(Mortonhall) in the first semi-final of Midlothian County Championship at Duddingston
on Sunday. Claire, now living and working in Edinburgh, joined Midlothian from
Dumbartonshire and Argyll at the beginning of the year. Claire had two good wins
on the opening day. First, she beat Kirsten Blackwood (Glencorse) by 4 and 3,
and then Noreen Fenton (Merchants of Edinburgh), a member of the recently victorious
Scottish Vets team against the Irish Vets, again by 4 and 3.
Jane, who moved
to Scotland last year and joined Midlothian County, had beaten Karen Marshall
(Baberton) in the morning by 5 and 3 and, in a closely contested afternoon match,
was the victor over Louise Fraser (Kingsknowe) by one hole. .
The second
semi-final will be contested by Rita Dee (Kingsknowe), who defeated the current
champion, Belinda Murphy in the first round, and Fiona de Vries (St Rule), who
was the second qualifier in the championship. Rita put out the current champion,
Belinda Murphy in the morning by pitching and putting with great accuracy. In
the afternoon she beat clubmate Sheila Lyon from Kingsnowe. Rita was ahead most
of the way, but Sheila fought back well, only to be defeated at the 18th hole.
Fiona
de Vries played very consistent golf to bear Jennifer Bryans (Harburn) by 5 and
3 in the morning. In the afternoon match Fiona went ahead and then stayed in front
to beat Tracy Laughland (Prestonfield) by 2 and 1.
