January 2006 - A Happy New Year to all MCLGA Members and great golfing in 2006 December 31 - Junior Orange Bowl Champ, Florida : Girls' Competition Sally Watson finished in joint ninth position after returning an excellent fourth and final round of two under-par 70, for a 72 hole total of eight-over-par 296 (70,75,81&72). Angela Park, the United States' top female junior player took the girls' title with a nine-under-par total of 279. Congratulations Sally on a great achievement and for winning the Doral-Publix Junior Classic 14-15 girls' title in Miami the previous week. December 28 - Junior Orange Bowl Championship, Florida: Girls' Competition - After a 2nd round 75 (total 145), Sally Watson is now in 7th place. The leader is Angela Park on 141, followed by Jennifer Song and Kiran Matharu on 142. December 27 - Junior Orange Bowl Championship, Florida: Girls' Competition Sally Watson is leading after Round 1 with score of 70, one ahead of Kiran Matharu, England and Angela Park California, both on 71. Seasons Greetings - Our Captain, Maggie McPherson, wishes all the Midlothian members a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Best wishes for great golfing in 2006. November 19th - Midlothian held a very successful dinner in the University of Edinburgh's St Leonards' Hall to celebrate the County Team's win at the Scottish County Finals at Ranfurly Castle in September 2005. The dinner was attended by the County Team, members of the County Squad, Officials, Past Captains, Caddies and Supporters of the Association. A good time was had by one an all (pictures) October 25th - Midlothian County Ladies' Golf Association held their Annual General Meeting at Liberton Golf club. This was followed by the Presentation of Prizes. Congratulations to the Midlothian County Team on becoming Scottish County Champions for 2005 and congratulations also to all the prize-winners (Ladies and Girls). Full list of prize-winners. with a net score of 74 off 14 of a handicap headed a field of
53 pairings who had qualified through their counties. Rona Hunter
and Jill Lothian (both Liberton) finished in 3rd place. Congratulations

Draw for Autumn Meeting at Harburn on September 6th
September 4th - Claire Hargan (Prestonfield), beat Amanda Edwards (Liberton), at the fourteenth hole of the Royal Burgess Golf course at Barnton this afternoon, to win the Antonio Vase and the Midlothian Champion of Champions tournament for the first time.A good crowd of supporters watched an excellent game played in brilliant sunshine. 2nd - Many congratulations to Pamela Williamson (Baberton)
on winning the Scottish Seniors Championship held at Grantown-on-Spey.
This year, for the first time, 16 competitors qualified
through a 36-hole stroke-play competition for a match-play event.
Pamela, the overnight leader by one shot, added a 74 to her opening
73 to win the stroke-play event on 147 - a lower total than her
two previous title wins at East Renfrewshire (159) in 1999 and
at Crail Balcomie (152) in 2002.
In the match-play Pamela went on to beat Pat Hutton (Lanark) by
1 hole in the first round; Noreen Fenton (Merchants of Edinburgh)
by 2/1 in the quarter final; Rose Anderson (Huntly) by 7/6 in
the semi final; and Moira Thomson (North Berwick) by 3/2 in the
Final - a great result.
Other Midlothian players competing were Karen Ballantyne (Craigmillar
Park), Ruth Brown (Lothianburn) (2nd flight quarter-finalist),
Anne Brownie (2nd flight Finalist), Rita Dee; Fiona de Vries (St
Rule) (2nd flight quarter-finalist); Noreen Fenton (Merchants)
(match-play quarter-finalist); and Elizabeth Simpson (Murrayfield).
Congratulations to Midlothian members on their selection for the Scotland Team for the Senior Women's Home International at Radyr from October 4 -6. The team is: Rose Anderson (Huntly), Lorna Bennett (Ladybank), Liz Campbell (Torwoodlee), Noreen Fenton (Merchants of Edinburgh), Moira Thomson (North Berwick), Fiona De Vries (St Rule), Pamela Williamson (Baberton).
August 28th - Jane Turner (Mortonhall) finished in second place in the Ness Open 36-hole women's golf tournament at Inverness Golf Club. The winner was Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar) who shot rounds of 73 and 76 for a total of 149. Jane had 77 and 75 for 152.
August 27th - Sally Watson (Elie & Earlsferry) represented Scotland in the Belgian Junior Interntional Open girls' championship at Royal Golf Club of Belgium. Sally who, qualified for the match play, was beaten in the quarter finals at the 19th hole by the eventual winner Ines Tusquets of Spain.
August 23rd - Claire Hargan,(a member at Mortonhall, Edinburgh), returned to her old stamping ground to win the Scottish Ladies Golfing Association county open meeting by five shots at Cardross. Claire had a mixed bag of five birdies, a double bogey and four bogeys in halves of 37 and 39 for a 76 - one over the ladies' par and matched the CSS. On August 14th, Claire last year's winner of the Riccarton Rosebowl at Hamilton was beaten into second placed by Jenna Wilson (Strathaven), who finished with an aggregate of 139, while Claire finished on the same mark of 141 as Clare Queen (Drumpellier).
A Reminder for the East of Scotland Championship 2005 - The East of Scotland Championship will be held at Murrayfield Golf Club, 43 Murrayfield Road, Edinburgh on Sunday September 26th 2005. This competition is open to all County Members in the East Division. The winner qualifies for SLGA Champion of Champions at Glasgow Gailes on Sunday 14th October 2005. 29 - BP Scottish Girls' Championship Finals Results

(on the right) on winning the 2005 BP Scottish Girls Championship.
Sally, who turned 14 this month, beat her girls' international
team-mate 13 year-old Carly Booth (Auchterarder) by 2/1 in this
morning's final. Cara Easton (Dalmahoy) (on the
left) completed the first part of the double by winning the consolation
event, the Ansley Reid Salver yesterday afternoon. A great result
for both girls.
July 28 - Scottish Girls Championship at Tain:- in the afternoon semi-finals Sally Watson having been down came through to beat Pamela Pretswell win at the 18th with a birdie. In the other semi-final Carly Booth proved too strong for Sally's sister Rebecca Watson and beat her by 3/2. To quote Kirkwood golf "The future for Scottish girls golf looks even rosier for winning the final of the Ansley Reid Salver was twelve year old Cara Easton (Dalmahoy) who beat Kirsty Moss (Monifieth) by four and three". Congratulations to Cara, and good luck to Sally in in tomorrow's final (results).

Niven by 1 hole; and Rebecca beat fellow Midlothian player Rachael
Livingstone at the 18th by 2 holes.
In the Ansley Reid Salver, Cara Easton beat Rachael Watton at

Midlothian will go to Ranfurly Castle [September 16-18] as East Division Champions after beating Stirling & Clackmannan 7-2 in their final match today at Alloa Golf Club (Schaw Park). East Lothian, who were level with Midlothian at the top of the table at the start of the final day, were held to a 4½-4½ draw by Fife who had been seeking to win the divisional title for the third year in a row. Midlothian had strength in depth with both Kirsten Blackwood (Glencorse) and Claire MacDonald (Gullane Ladies) earning 5pts apiece; Karen Marshall (Baberton) 3 ½ and Belinda Murphy (Mortonhall) 3pts. Midlothian's champion, Claire Hargan (Mortonhall) got all the tough ties - but lost only twice out in six outings and finished with one win and three halved ties. Midlothian had beaten Fife 6-3 on the opening day and drawn 4½-4 ½ with East Lothian on Day 2. Midlothian complete the line-up for the four-corned Scottish county championship finals. Northern Counties, South and Lanarkshire had already booked their places by winning their divisional titles. (Full results and pictures.)

After two days coaching at St Andrews and
Kingsbarns, Sally Watson has been selected to take part
in a week's coaching at the Harmon School of Golf, in Houston,
Texas in October. Two girls have been selected by Butch
Harmon for this tuition. They are Kiran Matharu (aged 16)
from Leeds who played for England in last year's Girls'
Home Internationals and Sally (aged 13) who played for Scotland
in the Girls' Home Internationals. Sally recently reached
the semi-final of the Scottish Ladies (Close) Amateur Championship.

May 27 - The match between Captain Neil Patrick's team and MCLGA Squad was played at Mortonhall in cold and windy conditions. Thank you to the Captain, Neil Patrick, for his warm welcome and hospitality - there was an excellent meal afterwards. The teams played fourballs - the games were keenly contested but unfortunately, on this occasion, Mortonhall proved too strong and recorded a 5-0 win (Results)

May 16-21 Scottish Ladies Amateur Close Championship at Cruden Bay - 30 members from Midlothian travelled to Cruden Bay to take part in the Scottish Ladies Championship from May 16-21. Sally Watson (aged 13) is to be congratulated for being the second qualifier (behind Clare Queen) with scores of 75 (Par 74 CSS 77) and 73 (Par 74, CSS 75). Pamela Williamson won the 4th scratch in the 1st round qualifying, and Claire MacDonald won 4th scratch in the 2nd round qualifying. 8 members of Midlothian qualified for the championship match-play and 5 for the consolation Clark Rose Bowl.(Full details on Midlothian members - also some photos of stroke-play prizegiving). Karen Marshall and Claire Hargan made it through to the quater finals; with Sally Watson losing in the semi-finals by 3/2 to Anne Laing (the 2004 Champion). Sally is to be congratulated on her excellent golf over the whole week; for being the second qualifier; for reaching the semi-finals in her first Scottish Ladies Championship; for winning a large number of trophies; and all at the age of 13! After the Prize-giving various Scottish teams were announced. May 14th - Draw for Midsummer Foursomes at Pumpherston on May 24th 2005 published
May 14th - Congratulations to Baberton on winning the Ladies' Interclub Tournament for three years out of the last four. Baberton beat Liberton by 2 & 1 over the double foursome at Kingsknowe in an exciting final which went all the way to the 18th. Baberton's first couple, Karen Marshall and Fiona de Vries were 4 down to the Liberton partnership of Amanda Edwards and Fiona Hume, but Baberton's tail wagged strongly and their second pairing of Fiona Hunter and Pamela Williamson finished 6 up after 17 on Liberton's Stephanie Sutherland and Rona Hunter. Baberton reached the final after beating Murrayfield by 4&3 in the morning, and Liberton beat the host club, Kingsknowe, in another close game by 3&1.
May 13th - Good luck to all Midlothian players (30) who
are playing in the "Scottish" at Cruden Bay next week. I hope

Sally Watson has been selected for coaching by Butch Harmon.
Sally will take part in the Red Bull Masters Class (hosted by
Butch Harmon and his brothers) at St Andrews Bay and Kingsbarns
at the end of May. At the end of the two day programme, 4 young
players will be chosen to participate in a week's tuition at the
Harmon School of golf in Houston Texas.
May 6th - The squad practice match between Duddingston and Midlothian Ladies was played at Duddingston on a rather chilly evening. Everyone at Duddingston gave us a warm welcome and there was plenty good-humoured banter from the home team. The games were keenly contested and played in a friendly spirit. Thank you to Duddingston for their hospitality. (Results)

May 1st - Claire Hargan (Mortonhall) completed a hat trick and won the Midlothian Championship at Ratho Park Golf Course for the third year in succession when she beat clubmate Jane Turner by 5/4 in the Final. Claire won the first hole with a par and birdied the 2nd hole to go two up. Jane immediately won a hole back with a birdie at the 3rd. However, Jane's putting, which had been so good in the previous rounds, then let her down and Claire was 3 up at the turn, having gone out in 37. The 10th hole was halved. Claire then won the 11th and 12th, halved the 13th and closed out the match at the 14th hole, finishing one over par. In the morning semi-finals Claire Hargan finished with birdie at the 18th to win by one hole, after a very tight match against Claire MacDonald. In the B Championship Sarah Devenish (Kingsknowe) beat Helen Warnock (Harburn) by 4/3. Sarah started with a birdie at the first, and was one up at the turn. She closed out the match at the 15th hole with an excellent up and down from the bunker to the right of the green. Trish Davis (Dalmahoy) and Sandra Ashurst (Murrayfield) were the losing semi-finalists from the morning ties. (B Championship Results and Photos)
April 29th - County Championship Match-Play (Photo File for 29/4/2005) - The Semi Finals of the 2005 County Championship will be contested by Jane Turner and Noreen Fenton; and Claire MacDonald and Claire Hargan (at 9am on Sunday May 1st at Ratho Park Golf Course).
In the Championship first round Sally Watson, the leading qualifier had birdies at the first and second and was out in level par in scoring a convincing win over Kate Rorke. Belinda Murphy and Claire Hargan also won their first round ties comfortably. In the afternoon quarter finals Jane Turner putted very consistently to beat Sally Watson at the 17th hole; while Noreen Fenton and Claire MacDonald had convincing wins in their ties; and Claire Hargan, the defending champion, won through at the 17th hole. In the B Championship the leading qualifiers, Maureen McLeod and Sandra Ashurst won their morning ties. In the afternoon Helen Warnock and Sandra Ashurst won convincingly, while Sarah Devenish and Trish Davis won through in very tightly contested games.

April 26th - The Midlothian County Ladies' Golf Association Championship Qualifying Competition over 36 holes was played at Ratho Park Golf Course on a cold and damp day. Sally Watson (Elie & Earlsferry) headed the qualifiers with 147 (74 73). Claire Hargan (Mortonhall) was second with 148 (69 79). Belinda Murphy (Prestonfield) took third place with 149 (75 74) and Tracy Laughland (Mortonhall) was fourth on 152 (76 76). April 11th - The SLGA have announced that the first
Girls' Inter Division Matches (sponsored by BP) will take place
at Ballumbie Castle Golf Club on 11 & 12 June 2005. Teams
of 6 girls from each of the four divisions will play foursomes
matches. The winners on Saturday afternoon will play each other
on Sunday morning for the trophy with the losers playing for 3rd
and 4th place. The draw for the first round of matches on Saturday
afternoon is North v East, West v South. Girls who have already
played for their County Team will not be eligible for selection.
Midlothian is very well represented in the East Division Team,
which has been selected and is as follows: Becky Copland (Fife),
Amanda Edwards, Rachael Livingstone, Jane Turner, Rebecca Watson,
Sally Watson (all Midlothian). Reserves are:-Ashleigh Wilton,
Hannah Harvey (both Fife), Louise MacGregor (Stirling & Clackmannan),
Megan Barbour (East Lothian). Krystle Caithness (Fife) was not
available for selection as she has already played for her Senior
County Team.
April 11th - Congratulations to the Scottish Vets Team [Noreen Fenton (Merchants) and Pamela Williamson (Baberton), team members, and Joan Marshall (Baberton) Captain] on their win by 8.5 to 3.5 against the Irish Vets in their annual match played this year on Gullane No 1.
April 10th - Cuthbertson Cup 2005 - Fife beat Midlothian by 2.5 matches to 1.5 in the final at Dunfermline Golf Club, Pitfirrane. The result was close with two matches going to the 18th. Stirling and Clackmannan took third place with a 2-0 win over East Lothian. The Midlothian Team of Rachael Archibald (Merchants of Edinburgh), Amanda Edwards (Liberton), Rachael Livingstone (Musselburgh Old), Jane Turner (Glencorse) won comfortabley against Stirling and Clackmannan in the morning, but Fife proved just too strong in the afternoon. April 5th - MCLGA Spring Meeting at Dalmahoy West Course . Fiona de Vries (St Rule) won the Cormack Salver for the best Scratch score at the Spring Meeting with a score of 74. The best net overall score came from Anne Hay (Turnhouse) who had a net 67. The weather was fine, cold and breezy, and the course wet from the overnight rain.Conditions improved in the afternoon sunshine. SS 69; CSS 72. Results.
April 3rd - Lanarkshire Ladies hosted the annual practice match against Midlothian Ladies at Lanark Golf Course. This resulted in a win for Midlothian - well done team. A girls match was also played (Results)

March 28th - Spring Meeting Draw Published. Members in Handicap Categories 1 and 2 are reminded that they need to enter for the Championship Qualifying Competition (at Ratho Park on April 26th) by April 15th. Please send your entries to Agnes Leslie as soon as possible.
March 21st - 30 girls and their parents attended a very succesful Girls' Social Night at the Dalmahoy Hotel and Country Club. Scott Dixon, the Dalmahoy Professional, gave an excellent presentation "Get Inside Your Golf Brain". The girls learned how to relax before shots; to remember their good shots; and how to cope with bad one. They then practised th skills and took part in a fun team competition. New catchphrases for Midlothian Girls are "celebrate" and "walk with style and a smile". Thanks go to Mandy Easton for organising the evening; Scott Dixon and David MacMullan (the Dalmahoy Professionals) for making it such fun for girls and adults; and Dalmahoy for the use of the golf range and for providing refreshments for everyone. March 20 - The first squad practice match of the season between Borders and Midlothian was played at Torwoodlee. The morning mist cleared and the match was played in warm and sunny conditions. The teams played greensomes: the games were closely contested and played in a friendly spirit. Midlothian won the match. The Junior Girls also played a foursome match which resulted in win for the Borders Girls. March 18 - Midlothian County Squad have their first practice match of the 2005 season, playing Borders Ladies on Sunday March 20th at Torwoodlee. A Girls' Team will also play a match under handicap. Play well everyone. (Teams)

March 1st Congratulations to Jane Turner who has been named for the Scottish Team 2 for the SLGA St Leonards Under 16 Open Stroke Play Championship at the Strathtyrum Course, St Andrews, 7 - 8 April. The teams are: Team 1: Krystle Caithness (St Regulus), Roseanne Niven (Crieff), Carly Booth (Auchterarder) Team 2: Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar), Jane Turner (Glencorse), Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm).
February 26th - Congratulations to Noreen Fenton (Merchants of Edinburgh) on being runner-up in the Spanish senior women's amateur international golf championship at Sherry Golf Jerez, Cadiz (on Friday). Noreen had rounds of 75 and 77 for a total of 152 to finish two shots behind the title winner, Cecilia Mourgue d'Algue from France who scored 72 and 78. Pamela Williamson (Baberton) is also to be congratulated on finishing in the top seven - Pamela scored 76 and 79 for 155.

January to April - Members of the MCLGA County Squad have started attending short-game coaching at King's Acre. So far the weather has been rather cold, but everyone who attended has been positive and has worked hard. We hope that the weather is warmer for the succeeding sessions! January 23 - 9 brave and enthusiastic girls (including 4 new members) turned up to play in freezing conditions in the 9-Hole Competition at the Braids today.The conditions were very tricky with the greens like ice-rinks and the girls did very well to play 6 holes (missing out the top holes) - Results
